Fostering new plans

After initially searching for what I wanted to major in, I found myself gravitating towards finishing the business prerequisites. This positioned me to apply to Foster at the beginning of sophomore year. I really enjoyed the breadth of topics that I studied to get there. Business wasn't an immediate choice for me, it came gradually. A business education was interesting to me because of how it helps our world run and everywhere you turn you see an aspect of it. This knowledge was important for me to have and something I could see myself applying to other areas, including law. Below is a response I did for my application in which I spoke about my cultural understanding which is an extremely important part of who I am and I choose to make it a priority. Which is why in my work, my cultural awareness will have a direct impact on what I do and hopefully will bring a new perspective to this world of business.

Building off of cultural awareness, something that I have leaned into in my identity is the different worlds I feel I occupy. Being Indian-American is truly a pride for me and something I want to highlight in my journey. I didn't always feel like I had many to relate to in this sense. I felt that there was a part of me I wasn't able to share with others as much growing up even with it being such an integral part of who I am. Coming to UW, the South Asian population was prominent and I looked forward to engaging in that community. Especially with commuting, and not having much time on campus, I sought a community and I found a new family with the South Asian Student Association. First joining as the Philanthropy chair, and continuing as the Sponsorship and then Social chair, SASA has been a highlight of my college journey. I have met new friends, been a part of planning fun events, interacting with so much of the community while learning more about the South Asian culture. I am grateful to have found this place, this SASA fam at UW I could come back to.

First step into Honors

I applied to UW honors as a second year student, sharing part of that path in my learning statement from H100 above. Learning was different in Honors classes, I felt that right off the bat in H230, Educational Psychology. First, you get to take classes that are intentionally put together to mean something bigger than the class. How I describe it is like coming back to homeroom. I didn't feel the pressure of grades, I wasn't thinking of numbers and curves. I was being inspired by peoples' stories, I was learning how my education comes together, I was being motivated to use it to affect some positive impact in my perceptive and actions. I have the most though provoking moments at my time at UW through the Honors community and its classes and for that I will be forever grateful for opening up a new side to education.
